09-04-2015: WASP revealed the "BigDelta" – the biggest delta 3D printer ever
It measured 12 meters in height and was dedicated to 3D printing houses from concrete
On September 4, 2015, Italian WASP unveiled one of the largest and most ambitious projects in the AM field – the 12-meter tall Big Delta. This gigantic 3D printer was part of an event called La Realtà del Sogno ("Reality of Dreams"), which took place from September 18-20 in Massa Lombarda, near WASP's headquarters. The official "live" premiere was combined with workshops, conferences, concerts, art exhibitions, and shows. The printer also served as the stage and scenography for the theatrical Shamballa show, presented at the Rigodon Theatre, written and directed by Alessandro Cavoli.
WASP was founded by Italian entrepreneur and 3D printing innovator Massimo Moretti in 2012. Before launching WASP, he worked on countless innovative projects and was one of the first people in Italy to fully embrace 3D printing technology in all shapes and sizes – from 3D-printed homes to RepRap manufacturing and everything in between. Together with a group of design students, he launched WASP (World Advanced Saving Project) in Massa Lombarda, Italy.
The company became a pioneer in developing large-scale 3D printers and has made significant contributions to the additive manufacturing industry, particularly in sustainable and affordable construction. WASP is known for its wide range of 3D printers, from desktop models to large-scale industrial machines. They are based on delta kinematics. Some of their notable models include the Delta WASP 2040 and the Delta WASP 4070, both of which are known for their reliability, precision, and versatility.
The BigDelta remains one of the world's largest 3D printers to this day, standing at 12 meters tall. The 3D printer was designed with the goal of building affordable and sustainable houses using natural materials like clay. And although the premiere of the machine itself was more of a performance and „a technology statement”, it was a groundbreaking project on many levels – particularly in the realm of 3D printing with concrete.
Today, WASP is one of the key suppliers of ceramic 3D printers (based on extrusion), and one of its official machines for construction 3D prinitng that are available for order is the gigantic Crane WASP, available in two configurations: a printing area of 50 sqm and 100 sqm.
