09-20-2018: Prusa Research launched Prusament – their proprietary line of 3D printing filaments
Prusa Research became one of the leading filament producers in Europe within a few years
On September 20, 2018, Prusa Research – the Czech manufacturer of hobbyist and desktop 3D printers, announced the launch of their own line of filaments under the name Prusament. Development of their in-house production lines took nearly a year and resulted in the introduction of four initial PLA colors: silver, lipstick red, azure blue, and a signature color for the line – glittery galaxy black. Over time, the company expanded its offering significantly to 16 categories, including such unique materials as PETG Tungsten and flame-retardant PETG V0 with fire resistance certification.
In the press release announcing the launch of the new product line, Josef Průša expressed some dissatisfaction with the quality of materials available on the market at that time, particularly the variations in diameter and ovality. These inconsistencies caused problems during 3D printing, especially with Prusa Research's proprietary products like the Multi Material Upgrade. This led to the decision to install their own production lines and create filaments specifically tailored to their 3D printers – the iconic Prusa i3.
As a result, with the implementation of dual diameter control, users can expect variations not at the standard +/- 0.5 mm, but just 0.02 mm!
Additionally, Průša emphasized the use of high-quality granulate and the rich color saturation of the filament, ensuring top-tier material quality. The spools were also marked with QR codes, allowing users to easily access technical details of the material wound on each roll. Průša also guaranteed that the way the filament was wound on the spool ensured no tangling issues during the 3D printing process.
The futuristic spool design was a nod to environmental concerns, using up to 45% less plastic compared to solid spools.
At the time, Průša claimed that they were the only 3D printer manufacturer with in-house filament production, boasting a team of 40 professionals overseeing material production.
